I left school after 5th year and successfully gained a place on the SVQ Level 2 Performing Engineering Operations course at North East College Scotland. After completing this course, I joined Altus Intervention and started my Diesel Mechanic Apprenticeship.
Hands on experience
The Modern Apprenticeship is a great opportunity to achieve industry recognised qualifications while working. In the first 2 years of my apprenticeship I attended college 1 day a week, studying my NC level 5 Mechanical/Manufacturing Engineering course whilst also working in the Altus workshop alongside experienced mechanics who I learned so much from.
As I developed and strengthened my skillset, I saw my confidence grow and I was contributing more to the job role. The most valuable skill I learnt during my apprenticeship is being able to adapt to different situations and always thinking ahead. I really enjoyed working with the equipment, particularly the offshore engines and high pressure pumping units - stripping them down, carrying out maintenance, rebuilding and testing them to the highest quality standards.
Working offshore
I've always wanted to work offshore and in 2019 I was accepted to join Altus' Trainee Programme as a Coiled Tubing and Pumping Service Assistant . In this role, I completed my apprenticeship and i've done multiple trips offshore. Throughout the apprenticeship i've received a huge amount of support from my colleagues and I continue to learn from them.
I'm now working through my training and competency matrix - this is a core part of Altus' culture where employees continually develop their knowledge and skills - you never stop learning here!
I would definitely recommend a Modern Apprenticeship at Altus as a career path for others. You learn invaluable skills for your career and work alongside a great team.
